Doug and Tracey Otter
Four years ago, Doug and Tracey Otter traded in a busy life in Williamstown for a less hectic pace in Queenscliff. They found not only the relaxed lifestyle they were seeking, but surprisingly, a recipe for business success. Their newsagency in the main street of Queenscliff won both the state and national newsagency of the year awards in 2011.
"Just because you move away from the city doesn't mean you're dropping out... you can still achieve big things and strive for excellence," says Tracey.
"Regional areas offer many opportunities for business people."
She says the easy access to the highway means it's possible to maintain business connections and personal relationships with people in the city, while enjoying the benefits of life in a beachside resort.
Doug likes to "duck off" and play nine holes of golf before work, and believes he really has found that often elusive balance between work and life.
"Queenscliff is surrounded by water on three sides, it has a really nice ambience, the harbour's been done up recently, you can get nice meals, all the things you love. I reckon it's the full package - the food and wine, the water, boating and golf, which I love."
