Removal of failed tree in Avenue of Honour

Tuesday, 24 December 2019

Residents and visitors are advised that Council is today undertaking the removal of a failed cypress tree in the Queenscliffe Avenue of Honour. This particular tree (#29 in the 2015 Homewood Report) is the first on the left following the large gap in the Avenue, just past the entrance to the Fisheries. Unfortunately, the tree has failed due to significant internal decay.

After the cypress was reported cracked on the afternoon of Monday 23 December, an arborist twice inspected the tree and found that "the immediate forward position of this tree is total canopy collapse". Branches of the tree placed under enormous stress overhang both the bike path and the Bellarine Highway.

The arborist continued that "no methodology enables sound retention" and therefore immediate removal is required. Traffic management will be in place throughout Tuesday 24 December while Council contractors remove the tree and safeguard the area in preparation for the busy Christmas period.

We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout this time.
